Our Ranking System

To give an impression of all districts Amsterdam has to offer, we have developed a star-system to rank the districts. Districts with a very positive public image have had five stars. Districts with a less positive public image got four, and so on.

The accessability of all districts is also ranked by stars. Again, five is best, one is bad. We devided this issue in three categories; car, public transport and bicycle. Aspects we looked at are accessability, convenience and distance to the city centre.

Property in Amsterdam

More expensive property can be found in the popular districts like Centrum, Oud-Zuid or ZuiderAmstel. 'Cheap' property can be found in districts like Geuzenveld-Slotermeer and Bos en Lommer. Those districts also have a less positive public image.

In every district a parking permit can be obtained. Every districts has contracted out this service to other organisations. You will find on the pages about the districts, the information about where to obtain a parking permit.

Dutch educational system

In the Netherlands, compulsory education is from 6 years up to 18 years of age. Primary education is from 4 to 12 years. Secundairy education is from 12 to 18 and is devided in three levels.

Highest gradation is VWO or 'Voorbereidend Wetenschappelijk Onderwijs' and takes 6 years to finish. A VWO diploma allows access to a Dutch university which is comparable with a postgraduate study in England.

HAVO (Hoger Algemeen Voorbereidend Onderwijs) takes 5 years to finish in general. A HAVO diploma allows access to a 'Hogeschool' or an undergraduate study.

VMBO or 'Voorbereidend Middelbaar Beroepsonderwijs' is divided in four sublevels. They all take 4 years to complete. A VMBO diploma allows access to an 'MBO-school' or 'Middelbaar Beroepsonderwijs'. All different sublevels of VMBO have a particular sublevel of MBO following on it.
